The NJ Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, also known as Form NJ-W4, is a New Jersey state tax form issued by the New Jersey Treasury Division of Taxation. This form allows employees to elect how much tax is withheld from their paycheck. If you’re employed by a company based in New Jersey, you’ll need to complete and submit this form.

Here are some key details about the NJ-W4 form:

  1. Filing Status: You’ll need to select your filing status, such as single, married/civil union couple (joint or separate), head of household, or qualifying widow(er)/surviving civil union partner.
  2. Allowances: Determine the total number of allowances you are claiming. The instructions provide guidance on calculating this.
  3. Additional Withholding: If you want to have additional money withheld for New Jersey State Gross Income Tax purposes, you can specify an extra amount.
  4. Exemption: If you meet certain conditions, you can claim exemption from withholding NJ Gross Income Tax. In that case, you’d enter “EXEMPT” on the form1.
